An Overview of Household Fans

When it comes to household fans, there are many different kinds to choose from. One of the most popular of course is the ceiling fan, which can be purchased with a multitude of different features. These can include different speed settings, as well as lights that have different settings. They are directly mounted in the ceiling, hang down, and are hard wired into your regular wiring. Some can be turned on from the unit itself, and also from a switch on the wall. Adjustments are made on the fan itself, from a pull string, or turn switches that are out of the way of the spinning blades. These blades can be made from various materials, such as wood, metal, or even plastic.

ceiling fans with lights and remote

There are other household fans to choose from as well. One of the other popular kinds is the box fan. These box fans are a fan in a housing with mesh sides, and these come in various shapes and sizes, depending on your needs. Some even have two fans, which you can set for intake of fresh air and sucking hot air out. They can stand alone, on a floor, and some models can be mounted directly into a window. These fans usually have an adjustable setting, and some even have remote or programmable controls.

CEILING FANS

One of the most popular fans is the fan that comes on a stand. These have adjustable heights, and can be tilted or even oscillating, which means that they rotate back and forth on a predetermined pattern. Many come with a variety of different settings, and can have a remote control, so you can adjust their speed from anywhere in a room.

Fans are an invaluable appliance in the summer. They can be set in a window for drawing hot air out of your house, or for bringing in cooler evening air. They can be used for removing dust and other contaminants from your house, as well as many other applications. It is important that when you are looking for a household fan that you follow some guidelines. One is that you should make sure that the fan blades are completely enclosed, especially when you have children or pets. The blades spin at an extremely high rotation, and can seriously injure you if they don't have some covering over them.

Make sure that whichever size or style of fan is UL listed, which will ensure that it is safe. If you already have a fan, you need to check it each year before you use it. Make sure that the cord and plug are in good condition, and clean the casing and fan blades, while unplugged. Having dust accumulated on the fan blades, or the covering will make the motor work harder, and the air flow won't be that good. If you can, it is a good idea to check the owner's manual to see if there is some way to oil the turning mechanism. Some have sealed bearings, so you don't need to lubricate them in any way.

If you are buying a ceiling fan, make sure that you follow the installation instructions carefully, and turn off the power at the breaker box. Depending on the size and the model, you may even have to have a professional come and set it up for you.

Which Fluorescent Ballasts Improve Lighting & Offer High Efficiency Savings?

One of the biggest problems with Fluorescent Lighting and light fixtures is and has always been a lack of public awareness as to the products being used. Typically a consumer or facility maintenance department know what kind of bulbs they need for a fixture, and when it comes time for a ballast, they seek "A Ballast" that would appropriately run the number and type of lamps being used.

There Are Many Types of Fluorescent Ballasts

CEILING FANS AT LOWES

Manufacturers such as Sylvania, Advance, GE and Prolume, (Many others), all make fluorescent T8 ballasts. What most people do not know is they make many different kinds all for the same lamp combination. These include:

- Residential Grade Ballasts
- Standard General Ballast
- CEE Rated High Efficiency Ballasts

Each of these varying grades of fluorescent electronic ballasts are available in 120 Volt, 277 Volt and Universal Voltage. Not only are they available in varying voltages, but they as well have a great variance as to the characteristics, energy consumption, light output and bottom line price.

The Benefits of Ballast Types & Pricing

Residential Grade Ballasts

Electronic Fluorescent Ballasts made for residential use are very common and typically found pre-installed in fluorescent fixtures available at stores like Home Depot and Lowes. The fixtures from these sources often carry a lower price than those available from commercial electric or lighting companies with the only difference being the ballast installed. The Residential or (GEB) Generic Electronic Ballast, are made with lower usage requirements such as 3 hours use per day. They have a smaller and less expensive electrolytic capacitor that when used for extended periods of time, crystallizes internally and fails. These ballasts when used in a commercial application rather than as a "Garage Light" usually fail with a year or two. Ballast cost @ .00 each.

Standard General Ballasts

Standard ballasts are designed for use in retail and offices with run times averaging 8-10 hours per use daily. Typically this is the "Normal" ballast you will receive when asking a supplier for a ballast. These are readily available, and often come with very competitive pricing from distributors @ .50 to .oo per ballast. The quality of these ballasts are average, however they last @ 3 -5 years maximum life and only carry a warranty longer than 3 years if installed with the same brand lamps as the ballast manufacturer. There is no energy benefits when using standard general ballasts, other than understanding that they operate with a ballast factor of 88%, which means the lamps are putting out 12% less light. Examples of a standard use ballast: Sylvania Quicktronic (QTP4x32T8 ISN-SC)

Beware: This is the ballast that most companies sell 100% of the time. Claims of "Best Quality, Professional Series or Commercial Grade" are misleading as it is intended for light use only, not heavy duty or energy efficiency.

CEE Rated High Efficiency Ballasts

High Efficiency Ballasts are considered to be the "Best Quality, Most Efficient" ballasts available in today's market. These ballasts which meet the efficiency standards of Energy Star and (CEE) Consortium For Energy Efficiency provide maximum light output of 95% of the design lumen output and producing up to 99.8 lumen's per watt. These are excellent choices for office, warehouse such as Fluorescent High Bay fixtures as well as retail store lighting.

This means brighter light, greater energy savings and a complete 5 year factory warranty no matter how many hours of use in any application.

Ceiling Fan Installation Step By Step

Are you planning to install a ceiling fan in your room? Although you may be tempted to hire a handyman for the job, you can save money by doing it yourself. Ceiling fan installation is not as difficult as it seems and the process requires a few simple steps. It doesn't matter if you you're not the type of person that's good with home projects as all you have to is follow the instructions.

ceiling fans for kids rooms

The first thing you have to do is lay out all the parts of the fan. The best way to start out with ceiling fan installation is to have everything ready for you in an organized manner. The fan you just bought will most likely come with all the instructions. Sometimes the instructions can be a little confusing so you can follow the tips outlined in this article.

CEILING FANS

After laying out all the parts, you will have replace a light fixture or install one there. Make sure you turn off the power for safety reason and check if the wires are hot with a circuit tester before you start to work on it. You may have to replace the electrical box with a metal one if it is plastic. You also need to take steps to make sure that it is secure so that it can support the weight of the fan, including the fan lights.

The next step of ceiling fan installation is to secure the ceiling fan mount with screws. Make sure that you have good support on your ladder during this project so you don't get injured. After installing the mount, you will need to go back to the instructions that came with the fan in order to see how the fan should be assembled.

Usually, this will consist of the base with the fan lights. Start by assembling the base and the fan lights then make sure that everything is installed securely. You will want to install the fan lights and the fan blades last. Start by installing each of the blades at once. You may want help from somebody to supply you with the blades and give you balance on a ladder. Then, you will want to screw on the bulb in the center.

The whole process is relatively simple and quick. You just have to make sure that your wires are connected correctly and that everything is mounted securely. Just remember that when installing fan lights, you should check the wattage limit for the bulb so you don't burn the circuit.

As you can see, ceiling fan installation can be done yourself. There's no need to spend money on a handyman when all you have to do is follow the instructions. You may need help if you need to install a circuit there but other than that, everything is one hundred percent doable.

Ceiling Fan Efficiency

There's nothing more desirable in a hot summer afternoon than to have a ceiling fan in the midst of all the people who is staying in your area. It is the most economic and convenient option in terms of cooling down and ventilating a certain room. Ceiling fans are no doubt very efficient in terms of electrical consumption as well as functions. You would only spend around 3 cents per hour when you use it instead of the 50 cents per hour consumption if you use air conditioning units and that is practically a lot of savings.

ceiling fans for kids rooms

It is definitely important that you choose the right type of fan for your area because not all brands of fans are as efficient as those that has energy star labeled on them. These are the topmost energy efficient fans of all brands. It would consume the least electricity but functions as much as any fan would.

CEILING FANS

The efficiency of ceiling fans is dependent on the following:

1. Motor - this is an important feature of the fan. It determines how much airflow it could deliver. The stronger the motor, the more airflow. However, larger motors mean larger energy consumption so you should only choose the right one for the room where you are placing it in.

2. Fan blades - this is also an important part of the fan. Without it, there would be no air flow. The blades stir the air around the room turning it into air flow or air current. Sucks in air from its surroundings and blows it in a single direction. The larger the blades, the more airflow. However, larger blades need larger motors so it definitely would consume more energy.

3. Room size - this is also an important determining factor for the efficiency of a ceiling fan. If you place a small fan on a large room, it would obviously be not insufficient and a large industrial ceiling fan in a tiny room is overkill. Know which ceiling fan is suitable for your room before you purchase it.

4. Positioning - if you have a long rectangular room, and you put the fan on one end, it won't probably reach the other end so the best position should be on the middle. Positioning also affects the efficiency of the fan.

Also, for a much more stronger airflow in large room situations, try pairing it up with an air conditioner. Pairing it with one is much more economical because in situations where an air conditioning unit alone couldn't do the job, you might need two or more of it. But if you pair it up with ceiling fans instead of air conditioners, you would practically save more. The cold air from the air conditioner would be circulated well in the room, thus, creating a chilly air circulation. So there's no need to buy another air conditioning unit. But of course, you can't do that on ridiculously large areas like buildings and stuff. But for large rooms, its good.

Advantages Of Motion Sensor Lights

It is essential for us to find various ways that we can care for our families. They are everything to us and it is tough to feel comfortable in our own households at nighttime when we believe everything we can hear is somebody attempting to break in. Alarm systems are important to have in any home - but there are a few other things you may use also.

After living in our place for the past year my hubby and I settled to make a little alteration to spruce up the yard. We were tired of all the neighbors having perfectly manicured lawns and exotic landscaping.

CEILING FANS AT LOWES

So we traveled to Lowes and settled to plant a few trees and blossoms. At least that was our intention. We didn't end up buying any. Winter is just around the corner and apparently everything would shrivel up until Spring. We turned our attention to some decorations that might help out until it was time to plant.

The first thing we looked at were security lights. Apparently these can be purchased in every shape and form. You can have some that look like rocks and others that shine so bright you would think the sun had come out. Our favorite choice were the motion sensor lights.

These would give us the ability to light up our front porch when we got home each night without really keeping it on the whole time. The motion sensor lights would be tripped by our presence and would turn off after a few minutes of inactivity. Not only do they supply security - but they help to save energy also! You can't beat that.

Basic Troubleshooting for a Ceiling Fan

Basic Troubleshooting

ceiling fans for low ceilings

I. Fan is not working

CEILING FANS

Check to make sure that all controls on the fan are functional and set properly. Does the fan have a light? Does the light work? If both the fan and the light are not working, it is likely a connection issue and/or the fan is not getting power. If the light is working and the fan is not, the first thing to check is if the black wire has come disconnected inside the canopy. Next, check to be sure that the blades turn freely. If they do not, the problem may involve stuck bearings , a broken flywheel, or simply something stuck in the path of the motor or blades that does not belong there.

II. Fan light is not working

If the fan is working but the light is not, the problem is usually a loose connection between the power source and the light kit.

III. Fan runs, but wobbles or shakes

See section on balancing.

IV. Fan runs, but slowly.

First, check to see that the fan blades turn freely by hand and coast after being spun. If rotation is in any way stiff, this is a sign of dirty, dry, or gummed bearings, which can slow the motor. The fan should be oiled. Second, does the fan wobble at all? If for any reason the blade pitch is steeper on one or more blades than the motor is designed for, this will slow the motor. See the section on balancing. If the blades turn freely and are balanced, the cause of a fan running slowly is almost always a bad capacitor. It should be replaced with a capacitor of equal value.

V. Fan makes mechanical noise while running i.e. clicking, knocking, grinding.

If it's a mechanical sound, chances are it is a mechanical problem. It could be something as simple as a wire that has slipped into the path of some moving parts. If the fan wobbles, balancing the fan may silence the noise. If the fan is balanced, the next thing to check is if anything is coming into the path of the blades or any other noticable moving part. If the noise appears to be internal to the motor, it is most likely a bearing issue, or something (such as a wire or connector) coming in contact with moving parts inside the housing. Dry bearings can also make a grinding, squeeling, or rattling noise. Lastly, sometimes mechanical noises are the result of loose parts on the fan. Check the blades, blade brackets, light kit glass, etc, to be sure all the screws are tight.

VI. Fan makes a humming noise while running

The key to a quiet fan is to isolate the motor vibration from all other parts. This occurs, in the majority of fans, in three places: between the motor and the blade brackets, between the blade brackets and the blades, and between the downrod/motor flange and the mounting bracket. Some fans also have vibration-isolating material between the mounting bracket and the ceiling. If your fan makes a noticable humming noise, inspect it for the above mentioned types of vibration-isolating material. With the exception of the rubber flywheel, if your fan is lacking any of the above, they are easy to add and should solve the majority of humming problems. You can always add additional material as rubber washers and spacers are readily available.

VII. Fan makes an electrical buzzing noise while running.

By far the most common cause of an electrical noise from a fan is the use of an improper speed control. Most fans made today are not designed to be used with Solid State speed controls. Use a speed control, such as a capacitor type, that is recommended for your fan. Do NOT use a dimmer switch EVER on a fan motor.

VIII. Fan moves very little air.

First, check and see if any of the other problems listed above apply. Running too slow? Off balance? Check and make sure the fan isn't operating in reverse (for most fans, clockwise, see 'reversing section'). Another, less likely, option is that the blades became bent or warped without actually putting the fan out of balance. Observe the fan from the side to see if the blades are still pitched noticably. If not, reference the balancing section for bending them back into place.

Lastly, you might just have a cheap fan that doesnt move a lot of air. Peruse our site, and buy a new one!

Mini Ceiling Fans - What You Should Know About These Type of Fans

We all know that ceiling fans are an economical and attractive way to keep things cool in hot weather. Plus, they can recirculate warm air in the winter time to reduce our heating bills, as well. However, you may not know that they come in a number of different sizes. Mini ceiling fans can be an excellent alternative to ordinary fans in the right circumstances.

ceiling fans for sale

Just like a regular fan, a mini ceiling fan helps cool your home. However, you can use it in tight spots where traditional size ceiling fans wouldn't work out. This allows you to install an attractive, efficient fan in spaces like the stairwell, hallways, narrow rooms, and just about anywhere else that you need a fan, but an old fashioned on won't fit. Plus, mini ceiling fans are comparable in cost to a standard type fan, and installation is extremely similar.

CEILING FANS

You'll find these fans in all kinds of beautiful styles and looks. Most home owners report being willing to pay a little more for a fan that matches their decor and offers quality construction, and it's not really a surprise. After all, these people know how much money their regular or mini ceiling fan is going to save them over the course of its life. On low, a ceiling fan of any size keeps a home gently cool for very little expense. Even turned up, it's a fraction of the cost of running an air conditioner.

It's best to pick a mini ceiling fan only when you need a smaller shape to fit the space. That's because a larger fan, with bigger blades, is going to result in more efficient operation. You'll get cooler while expending less energy. With today's larger homes and higher ceilings, big fans with long downrods are extremely popular. However, they don't work everywhere. That's where mini ceiling fans can be a big help. After all, small spaces need even more cooling than larger ones, since they often have poor air circulation.

If you have a narrow or oddly shaped space that you need to keep cool, a mini ceiling fan might be the perfect choice. Inexpensive, attractive, and efficient, these fans have everything going for them. You won't find as large a selection in mini fans as you will in full sized ones, but there are still lots of options out there. Check them out and see if one of these fans is right for you.

Not only does the appliance itself enhance the look and function to provide a different kind of atmosphere within a room but the lighting also plays a very important part in setting the ambiance. Most leading brands have realized this and now produce different fan globes to fit your fan for whatever your arrangement is.

CEILING FANS

Before you consider a fan light it is always recommended to consider the size of your room, the colours of the walls, the height of the ceiling and the type of lighting you desire.

Lighting kits may come in the form of individual lights that can be angled in any direction or more commonly come in the form of ceiling fan globes. Either option allows you to make a beautiful statement on room. For a large hall like room with high ceilings you may wish to choose a more elegant fan with elaborate lighting. For a small room with low ceilings, a more compact fan would be sufficient and would only require the simplest of globes for lighting.

The great thing about ceiling fan globes kits is that they are very easy to install, especially if you already have a fan already installed. See our article on How To Install Ceiling Fans and Globes for more information.

The fan globes and lights come in a varied assortment of styles and materials from glass globes to plastic globes, from clear transparent to frosted in color and can come powered with neon or normal bulbs. It all depends on the style you wish to go for and what will compliment your room décor. The best place to find a huge variety is online, all from top leading brands.

Cut Down Your Heating Bill This Winter - DIY, And Cheap!

First, we shall sift through some facts. If heating oil stays around .19 a gallon (and who knows how much it could go up by the real cold settles in) and the average home uses 666 gallons (in New England [src: Prov. Journal])-- creepy number -- while the average apartment uses 400 gallons (src. Prov. Journal), this means the average home uses nearly 24 and the average apartment uses 76 just to stay warm. I don't know about you, but it takes me a long time to make that kind of money. A really long time.
Let's make some changes.

The Save Money -ing DIY -er (yeah, original...)

Thermostat:

Anyone can do it, drop your thermostat a few degrees. Wear sweatpants around the house and suck it up. Stay bundled up when you're home in blankets. A few degrees is about a half gallon of oil at the minimum a day. At the minimum. Doesn't sound like much. Every month that's almost saved. Still seem pointless? Not to your wallet.

CEILING FANS AT LOWES

Comforters:

Compounding on what was said before, at night when you're laying and doing nothing you'll notice the cold more often; on top of the fact it usually is actually colder. Go buy a nice comforter and drop the temp in the house even more-- save another 10-15 gallons of oil. That's a few more bucks. The blanket will be paid off soon enough. But if you really want to save money and reduce-reuse-recycle, go and hunt through Grandma's attic (or your parents) for some old home-made quilts; they're extremely thick and you won't even have to buy a comforter.

Fireplace:

Does your house or apartment have a fireplace? First, make sure it's closed when ever you aren't using it. I knew some kids in college whose heating bill was through the roof because they didn't know their fireplace was open. But for you, Mr./Mrs. Do-it-yourselfer, time to open the flue and take the truck for a ride. If you check out Craigslist and scour the Classifieds of your newspapers, tons of people cut down trees and just want someone to take the wood away. This is gold during the winter. Often you've just got to split the wood; chances are you can either get a cheap axe from a yard sale or someone you know has one. Capitalize on this if you can; try to take as much wood as you can. A little manual labor never hurt anyone.

Water Heater:

Another easy one; except for those of you who live for the turn-my-skin-bright-red type of showers. Drop the water temperature for your showers. As great as it is to take a scalding hot shower after battling the elements on your way home from work, this is a huge no-no. It's the place where much of your oil is used, and unnecessarily. Try bringing the thermostat on your heater down to 120 degrees, you'll adjust before you know it.

Pipe Insulation:

Although this seems to be something that would be for a home-owner, this is extremely valuable and plausible for an apartment renter to do as well. Be creative with it, if you must. It costs maybe to insulate your heating pipes and saves about 15% of the heat that your oil burner makes that is often lost through transferal to your heating system.

Replacement Windows:

Replacement windows are ideal for long-term money savings. Windows that are old; usually past the 10 yr. point, have lost a lot of their durability with the elements, and are due to be replaced. Replacement windows are the cheapest option; you don't have to rip out the entire window frame and they are relatively easy to put in (I've done it a few times before, and it really isn't that bad). These cost about 0 each, but should last another 10 years and cut 10% off your heating bill annually.

Insulation:

Insulation is a wonderful thing. Often, people say "My walls are insulated" and thing that's that. Just like the pipes, there are always things forgotten. Take above and below for example. What the hell is he talking about, you might be thinking. Ceiling and floor. Is below your floor insulated? The ceiling of the room below you. Heat can easily escape through the floor. Well, A) heat is often generated in heaters running along the floor, which forces it into the floorboards and into the basement (or room below) and B) the floor temperature is still warmer than outside and the ground, so that's heat lost. Insulation is pretty cheap, check out Home Depot or Lowes to get the grade you want. If it seems a little price-y, the cheapest stuff is better than nothing.

Now enjoy your winter and your newfound money; thanks to Save and Make Money!

Ceiling Fans

Running a high-efficiency ceiling fan cost you as little as one dollar a month. Compare that to running a window air-conditioner at .00 a month, and you can see why they are called an energy saver. When used properly, ceiling fans can save you money on utility bills in both the winter and summer months.

ceiling fans

In the summer time your ceiling fan offers the greatest energy saving benefits when run correctly. Be sure the fan blades push the air in a downward motion. This creates a breezy cooling effect. While a ceiling fan does not lower the air temperature, it does make the room feel more comfortable by providing a nice circulatory breeze. This can easily be done by opening a few windows and allowing the ceiling fan to circulate warm air through the open windows toward the outdoors. Effective circulation can make you feel up to 5 degrees cooler, and reduce air conditioning bills by up to 30%.

CEILING FANS

In the winter time you can run your ceiling fans in the opposite direction. Since warm air is lighter then cool air you need to have the blades push the hot air that accumulates near the ceiling toward the edges of the room and down the walls. Which recirculates warm air back through the room without the breezy cooling effect. Using this effect can lower your dwellings heating bills considerably. This technique helps your furnace from not having to work as hard and the consumer doesn't have to pay the utility company as much. Which saves on the environment and is a great "Think Green Energy Saving" tip. Ceiling fans come in a variety of shapes and sizes and can range in price starting at .00 running as much as 0.00. If you intend to to use your fan regualry invest in a model around 0.00. You will get a quieter more efficient, more dependable unit. Some items come with several speeds from low to high speed. If you prefer to have a special type of blade or unique adornments or fancy cut glass as part of the lighting you can upgrade and add elegance and warmth to any room. Some models come with an optional remote control. You can leave the switch and use it to turn the fan off and on, then use the pull chains on the fan to adjust the speed. Another option is to install electronic controls.

High quality fans give you the option of adding radio control receiver kits. The receiver accepts signals from a special wall switch to control itself and requires no additional wiring. The receiver also accepts signals from any of these types of devices. You can program all of these types of switches from one single remote. Therefore you can control all the fans in your dwelling from a single place, your easy chair, office or wherever.

Unknown to a lot of people there is a simple rule to follow when trying to figure out the fan blade size that is proportional to the room. For any room that is 12 feet or less a 36 inch fan is sufficient. For rooms that are 12feet - 16feet use a 48 inch fan. For rooms that are larger then 16feet use a 52 inch fan. Any room that is larger will require two separate fans equally spaced apart. Placement of a ceiling fan is normally seven feet from the ground to the fan. Which typically sets the fan some 10 to 12 inches from the ceiling. If you have a higher ceiling you will need to purchase a downrod to place the fan at the 7 foot range. To gain maximum energy savings considering buying the Energy Star ceiling fan. They have a lot more benefits. They can circulate on average of 15% more air then there competitors, and have the same style and elegance as other fans. Using a ceiling fan correctly is a great energy saving tip we at "Think Green Energy Savings. com believe that utilizing simple things like these help our readers save money and also contribute to thinking green.

Keep "Thinking Green" my friends.

Modern Ceiling Fans - Affordable Cooling Option

Generally, modern ceiling fans are designed to cool your home during summers. But innovations have made it possible to manufacture fans that are designed to keep the warm air inside your home during winters.

ceiling fans home depot

Plus, they come in many attractive designs and stunning styles that they have become a part of modern home decorations. Take a look at some of popular designs available on the market today.

CEILING FANS

Hugger Ceiling Fans:

If you are planning to install a ceiling fan, make sure first that you have measured the height of the ceiling where you plan to mount the fan. Not all fans are meant to be installed on rooms with low ceilings because the blades or lights hang low. However, just because you have a low ceiling does not mean that you cannot install a fan. Some manufacturers have provided solutions to this problem by offering hugger ceiling fans. The fan blades are designed to "hug" the ceiling to provide more room. Some drawbacks to this design are the short blades and poor air circulation because the blades are so close to the ceiling.

Rustic Ceiling Fan:

One of the best replacement ideas to have is the rustic fan. The unique design adds charm and class to any contemporary home. It could have a natural look with options such as twig patterns and animal vignettes on the fan blades. You can usually see this type of fan in resorts, hunting camps and lodges. Many rustic fan blades are made of real wood, with popular choices being walnut, hickory or polished pine. Some use bamboos that are wrapped or stitched in other natural fibers. A standard fan can be made to look like the rustic version by applying some aging processes on them such as expedited weathering tarnish or chemicals.

Tropical Ceiling Fan:

If you want to add a tropical element in your home, consider installing a tropical fan. This type is ideal for homes located in areas with warmer climates. Generally, they have wider blades with a natural, woody appearance. They are designed to be used outdoors, in such areas as gazebos, porches or patios. They have efficient air movement and high-powered motors to create greater speed in order to cool a humid air.

Fanimation Tropicana is one of the popular tropical fans available on the market today. They have oval blades which are responsible for giving better air circulation. Both the blades and the motor have wicker covering which make these fans suitable for outdoor use and within damp areas.

Ventilation Ceiling Fan:

A ventilation fan is suited for both residential and commercial applications. It can help reduce your electric cost while giving you a comfortable work or living environment. During hot days, it works by pushing the cool air up the floor and circulating it around the room. In winter, it does the reverse by pushing down the warm air back to the floor to give you a comfortable warmth. Mounting a ventilation fan in the attic is one of the wisest investments you could ever make. It will draw out the hot air from your attic and draw in fresh air into the area.

There are many design types of modern ceiling fans out there. You can find them in home improvement stores or online retailers. Just keep in mind that prices for ceiling fans vary depending on options.

Wiring a Ceiling Fan

Most ceiling fans come complete with a light, a variable speed motor, and a reverse switch. This seems like a lot to think about when you're doing all the wiring, but it is really easy. The fan manufacturers take all the guesswork out for you.

ceiling fans with lights

The most important thing to remember is that ceiling fans are fairly heavy and they need a strong light box to hold them in place. If you're building a new home, then you can put a fan light box in the ceiling instead of a regular light box. A fan light box is made of metal and usually extends between two floor joists or rafters for extra strength.

CEILING FANS

Be sure to turn off the circuit breaker in the breaker box to kill the power. Also make sure to communicate to other members in the house what you are doing so they don't accidentally turn the breaker on.

When you're ready to install the ceiling fan, you will need to take apart the fan housing from the canopy. The canopy is the base of the fan that connects to the light box in your ceiling. It will have the wires that you need to connect to the wires in the ceiling light box. The functionality of the fan will determine how many wires it has.

If the ceiling fan has a light, there will most likely be four wires that need to be connected. There will be a black wire for the fan, a blue wire for the light, a white neutral wire, and a green ground wire. The black and blue wires from the fan can both be wired to the black wire from the light box with a wire nut. The white wire from the fan will connect to the white wire from the light box, and the green wire will connect to the copper ground wire from the light box with wire nuts.

Once the electrical connection is finished, the wires should be secured and tucked neatly into the ceiling light box. Now the canopy of the fan can be attached to the mounting screws in the light box. Make sure the screws are tight.

Now you can install the fan housing to the canopy to secure the fan motor. This is done with the housing screws. Make sure these screws are tight also. Once that is finished, you can install the fan blades. Most fans will only allow the blades to fit in one way.

Now, you can turn the breaker on and test the fan to see if it works.

The Truth About CFLs - Are They Dangerous If They Break?

I am a staunch advocate of CFLs (compact fluorescent light bulbs). While they initially cost a bit more, they last much longer than incandescent bulbs, and are so easy on your electric bill that they have been paid for in short order. As an added bonus, they produces less heat, reduce eye strain, pollute less, and don't waste energy as fast. So what is the downside of all this?

This bulb is composed of a metal and ceramic base, glass, phosphor, and a tiny bit of mercury. And that is what all the panic is about. Someone out there is attempting to terrify CFL users by scaring them to death with the mercury, which, of course, is hazardous to your health. My guess is that this is being perpetrated by either the manufacturers of incandescent bulbs, or their investors!

CEILING FANS AT LOWES

To get this into perspective, let's look at how much mercury is in this bulb. There are 5 mg., or 2 ten thousandths of an ounce of mercury in a bulb. It will either be a tiny bead (the size of a period ) or a vapor that cannot be seen.
The fever thermometers that we have been using all our life contain over one hundred times more than that. To provide the electricity for your incandescent light bulb, a coal powered power plant will emit as much as four times that amount of mercury!

If a bulb breaks, the amount of mercury that escapes into the air over an 8 hour period (of which only a fraction would be inhaled) is just about equal to the exposure you would get from eating two cans of tuna fish. It is not enough to make you sick.

However, no mercury is always best, so you need to dispose of these bulbs and clean up any breaks carefully. All Home Depot and Lowes stores accept old fluorescent bulbs of all sizes. Just bring them in and they will handle the recycling of them. However, should one break there are some precautions you should take:

o Immediately turn off the heat or a/c, open a window, and turn on an exhaust fan, a ceiling fan, or some other fan if you have one, leave the room and close the door. In fifteen minutes or so, the mercury will have exited the room...if you have no fan, stay away a little longer.
o Obviously, kids and animals need to be kept away from there.
o Don't use your broom or vacuum cleaner to pick up the shards. Use cardboard to sweep it together, into a sealable plastic bag. Put the cardboard in there as well. Masking tape is great for picking up the tiny pieces. Wipe down the area with a damp paper towel when you are done...all refuse goes in the sealed plastic bag.
o It's not a bad idea to wear plastic gloves when doing this...or wash them thoroughly when you are done. Bring the bag to your recycle center.

Now get this into perspective, please! If you broke twelve or more bulbs in the house every day for fourteen days, you might start to have some symptoms...like tiredness, clumsiness, trouble remembering things, and lack of concentration. Breaking one CFL is not going to hurt you!

Ceiling Fan Air - Why Reversing Ceiling Fans in Winter is a Dumb Idea

As an architect and engineer, I can understand why the architects for some projects seek truly reversible air movement from ceiling fans. This simplistic notion of ceiling fan use has been around for decades. Let me explain as an architect with a Masters degree in Engineering, why this is not a sound idea.

ceiling fans home depot

Use of ceiling fans for air movement to energy-efficient summer comfort is straight forward. In summer, providing air movement of 160 fpm in the occupied zone will allow the thermostat to be raised 4.7°F while maintaining the same thermal comfort. Raising the thermostat 1°F typically saves between 3% and 4% of cooling energy cost*. Raising the thermostat 5°F will typically save between 15% and 20% of cooling energy costs. In summer, providing air movement of 230 fpm (2.6 mph) in the occupied zone of an air conditioned space will allow the thermostat to be raised 10°F while maintaining the same thermal comfort. This thermostat increase would save 30% to 40% of air conditioning cooling costs.

CEILING FANS

Use of ceiling fans at low speed with air flow downward for energy efficiency by destratification in winter is well established. Circulation of indoor air at 3 to 4 times per hour, particularly in spaces with high ceilings, can allow the thermostat to be set 10°F to 15°F lower while maintaining the same thermal comfort. For each 1°F the thermostat is lowered in winter the typical heating energy cost saving is 1% per 8 hour period, or 3% per day. Lowering the thermostat in winter by 5°F from 85°F to 80°F will typically save approximately 15% of heating energy cost per day.

Here is the catch. If the airflow from the ceiling fan is reversed with airflow upward, even at low speed, the velocity of air across the ceiling above the fan is high, typically around 400 fpm. At this speed, the heat transfer coefficient at the ceiling is around 1.87 Btu/h.ft2.°F. However if the ceiling fan is running at low speed with airflow downward the airflow across the ceiling is low, typically 80 fpm. At this speed, the heat transfer coefficient at the ceiling is around 0.051 Btu/h.ft2.°F.

In short, reversing the air flow direction from ceiling fans in winter the heat loss through the ceiling is increased by a factor of around 3.7 times due the increase in surface conductance.

Anything a Guy Can Do A Chick Can Do Too

A very good friend of mine keeps commenting on how amazed he is at how I just get stuff done. To me I see something that I want to do or needs to be done, so rather than dwell over it, just do it. Done.

Home improvement projects are something I love to do. Sometimes the project is chosen like painting a room or changing the landscaping. Other times, something happens that results in the project needing to be done like a leaking faucet or a broken ceiling fan.

CEILING FANS AT LOWES

My recent project has been lingering for about a year or so. The toilet on the main floor had a small leak and I replaced the bolts/washers thinking that would do the trick. Well, the bolts became gross, black and smelly due to the leak continuing over the past year. I thought I would try to replace the bolts/washers again for rather than 0-300%2B for a new toilet. Plus I had no idea how to replace a toilet.

Well, after spending an hour trying to get the last bolt free from the tank I let out a "Aaaahrrrgg! That's it!" Jumped into my car and headed to Lowes for a new toilet. Walked right up to the plumbing person, Heidi (yeah a chick, how cool is that?), asked her to help me.

TIP: When in doubt, just ask for help.

It will save you time and hassle.

Heidi was awesome. She hooked me up with a complete toilet kit for 5. I was a bit nervous about installing it. I hate plumbing jobs because you can't use duct tape or painter's chalk to hide your oopsies.

A few things I learned:

1. Toilets are not as heavy as I thought.

2. Installation is so easy, under one hour from removal of old to flushing the new.

3. Don't be intimidated by ANY challenge.

No. I am not adding plumbing services to my organizing services. Just because I can install a toilet, doesn't mean I want to do it again. I still don't like plumbing projects

Don't think because you have never done something you can't. Most tasks are NOT that difficult. The worst that will happen from your attempts is you won't be able to do it and you'll likely learn something along the way. Think about how great you will feel for giving it your best effort and completing it.

What home project did you tackle recently?

Ceiling Fans - Decorative and Functional Devices

A ceiling fan is not only decorative, it is functional as well. A ceiling fan can draw or blow air, depending on which direction you have the blades rotating. When you use a ceiling fan in conjunction with an attic fan or blower, and have an air conditioner in your home, it makes your house much more energy efficient.

ceiling fans cheap

Some of the questions you may have about ceiling fans are, which fan will blow the most air? What is the quietest ceiling fan? What brand is has the best warranty and will give you the most for your money? The best way to find the right ceiling fan for you and the room you wish to install it, is to comparison shop.

CEILING FANS

The size of the blade will determine the airflow. A normal blade length is 30" to 52". The longer the blade, the more air it will catch. A normal blade pitch is 8 to 14 degrees. More air will be moved the larger the pitch is.

The motor of your ceiling fan should be sealed bearings or Oil Bath. When you have the sealed bearings, it won't require any maintenance. You will need to service the oil type on occasion.

Almost all ceiling fans are reversible. Most of them have a 3 speed pull chain fan. If you would like, you can purchase a wall control or a remote unit for your fan. Some already come with a wall control which usually has from 3 to 6 speeds. With a wall control, variable speed outlets will make most fans hum.

Your ceiling fan should not wobble. If it is shaking really bad, this is a hint that something is definitely wrong. Sometimes it is as simple as loose blades that are causing the problem. Check the fan for loose blades and a loose connection between the body of the fan and the rod. You can also check the mounting at the ceiling to ensure that it is securely fastened. It may be you merely have a balance problem. Before attempting to fix this, check to see if you have any bent blades. You can buy a balancing kit for your ceiling fan at many different stores. They have a clip and a number of weights that will match the weight of the clip.

During the winter, when you heat your home, the warm air rises to the ceiling. The heat doesn't turn off until the temperature at the lower levels of your home are within the range of the temperature you have your heat on. When you reverse the direction of your ceiling fan, it will help to disburse the warm air at the top to the rest of your house. This will allow you to save money on your heating bills.

A ceiling fan can add warmth and character to any room in your home. It is a beautiful way to help beat the high cost of heating and cooling your home, no matter what the season.

Installing Ceiling Fan

There are different ways to install a fan. When you hire a professional to install a ceiling fan, you can choose any of the options for installation. If you are installing a ceiling fan yourself, you will need to choose an option that matches your abilities. If there is a ceiling fan currently in the ceiling, installing a new one will be easier than if there is no light or fan already in the ceiling. This can also effect the decision if you will install a ceiling fan yourself or hire someone to do it.

When choosing which type of installation that you want, if you are not sure, you can go online. You will be able to look up detailed instructions to see if you are able to do the installation yourself. Always follow all safety directions and turn off the electricity when doing any electrical work.

CEILING FANS

POWER SWITCH TO CEILING BOX ONLY

This is an installation where the fan (and light if it has a light kit) is turned on from a chain that is hanging from the fan. A remote control comes with some ceiling fan models. If there is already a light or ceiling fan in the ceiling, most do-it-yourselfers will be able to install this type of fan.

SINGLE SWITCH FOR LIGHT AND FAN

With this installation the power to the fan and light are turned on and off at the switch. To have the fan on high or low and to have the light or fan on separately, the chains will need to be used from the fan. This will take more knowledge especially if the switch isn't already there.

SINGLE SWITCH FOR FAN AND DIMMER FOR LIGHT

For this type of installation you will need more knowledge since the light and the fan will need its own wiring. This will be more challenging if it isn't already wired for this. The fan will still use the chain to switch fan speeds.

WIRE SPLICE

When the power starts at the switchbox, the hot line is spliced. The power then travels to both switches and then the fan and the light. When the power starts at the ceiling fan box, the hot line is spiced. The power will then travel to switches then to the fan and light.

HELPFUL HINTS

Do as much of the wiring as you can on the ground before you lift up to the ceiling. Print out any helpful information you need since the computer will be off. Double-check all aspects from safety to connections. When in doubt if you have the skill to install a ceiling fan, hire a professional. When renting, never work on electrical fixtures, the landlord should do that.

It's important to choose a heater that heats the house evenly, looks good, and is easy to install and maintain.

Even Heating Of The House

CEILING FANS AT LOWES

On a cursory look, all conventional heaters look the same, but a closer investigation reveals subtle differences. One of the problems is that the heat does not spread throughout the home. The best heater is the one which is affordable, spreads heat in all rooms, and lasts long. A Charmglow heater has all these advantages and more.

Charmglow Is Fitted With Electric Blower

A Charmglow heater comes with an electric blower which helps spread the warm air in the entire house and does not concentrate the heat in just one room. The outer surface of this heater does not get too hot, so it's safe to keep the heater in a room with children. Ventless heaters give you the same heat as that of a fireplace.

If the blower's noise disturbs you, switch off the blower for some time. But, to heat other rooms, you must switch on the blower which comes with the Charmglow heater.

You can purchase this ventless heater from stores like Lowes, Home Depot, or any other hardware store. With professional help, you can install and maintain the heater easily.

Buying a Charmglow heater satisfies your family's need of a warm and cozy home. These heaters are affordable and have high quality. They have high performance which lasts several years.

History of Ceiling Fans

Want to know about the history of ceiling fans? Let us briefly discuss where ceiling fans came from. It was in the 1800s when fans were invented. It was in the United States that the ceiling fans first appeared.

ceiling fans

Around the 1860s to 1870s, a kind of fan that was powered by running water was created. It was not powered by an electric motor at first. It was just water with a turbine that works hand in hand to turn the blades of the fan. At that time though, there were only two-blade fans available. They have a built a system that was able to accommodate a lot of fans. They used it for offices, restaurants, and even in stores.

CEILING FANS

By the 1880s, it was when fans powered by electricity were created. Instead of a huge belt system being powered by water, it had its own motor unit powered by electricity. It was John Fany who invented the electric-powered fan. He adapted the concept he had used when he created the motor for the first sewing machine from Singer. Back then, the people called it the "Fany Electric Fan" after it inventor. It was operated like the popular fan that we know today.

He continued to make improvements to his invention no matter how many other competitors were catching up to his design. He added a light kit to the ceiling fan to make up for the light fixture that has been replaced by the ceiling fan, just like the ceiling fans of our time.

Ceiling Fans...Why Use Them?

Fans have been used for centuries to create air-flow and comfort humanity during hot weather. Do you know that if used properly, fans may also comfort during cold weather? It's true! Hot air rises. This is a fact and an attribute of nature, of which most people are already aware. Of course, during warm/hot weather, we want the hotter air to rise above us. When it's cool/cold, we want that warmer air closer to the ground, which we habitually occupy. Ceiling fans can help us to maintain this "comfort zone".

ceiling fans with lights and remote

A good ceiling fan, when properly used and maintained, can also alleviate heating and cooling costs in one's home. With the rising cost of fuel and energy, this is most desirable to many people. And for those concerned about our environment, sensible usage is an important factor in cutting down on the consumption of energy sources which may contribute to the pollution of our planet.

CEILING FANS

One can, realistically, save between and (USD) annually on utility bills, plus the savings on air conditioning and heating costs gained when a ceiling fan is properly installed, maintained, and used. A good quality ceiling fan will use up to 50% less energy that a conventional fan, thereby cutting back on overall energy usage.

It is important to use the right size and model of fan in a room to receive the maximum benefits with the minimum energy usage. There are many name-brand websites, as well as independent dealers, online to do comparison shopping. Having stated that, the Environmental Protection Agency promotes the "EnergyStar" program, which focuses on using products specifically manufactured for more efficient use of energy. For EnergyStar Qualified ceiling fans, visit http://www.energystar.gov and type in "ceiling fan" in the search browser located in the upper right-hand corner of the site. This will direct you to specifications and a link for the EnergyStar Qualified Ceiling Fans, along with other pertinent data for determining which ceiling fan(s) may be right for your home. You will also find, toward the bottom of the webpage, links for ceiling fan installation and tips for the do-it-yourselfers among us.

A quality installation is just as important as the quality of the ceiling fan(s) which you choose. If you have any doubts about your own ability to do a top-notch installation, seek out a certified electrician to do the job for you.

Now, how does one attain both comfort and cost efficiency with the use of ceiling fans? Once you have chosen, purchased, and installed your fan(s), use these guidelines:

Summertime - Set your fan(s) for counter-clockwise rotation to "pull" the warmer air toward the ceiling of the room. By drawing the warmer air up, and causing it to be replaced by cooler air, one's thermostat will register a cooler temperature in the room, thus causing the air conditioning unit to operate less, thereby saving on energy consumption.

Wintertime - Set your fan(s) to a clockwise rotation to "push" warmer air down from the ceiling and "force" it to mingle with the cooler air closer to the floor, thereby warming the ambient temperature of the room. This, in turn, enables one to lower the thermostat and still ensure that the area which most of us occupy in a room is at a comfortable level.

In conclusion, by following the information in this article, one can see an appreciable difference in heating and cooling costs. And one can have more "control" over one's indoor environment, with proper use of ceiling fans. Plus, one can be satisfied in knowing that we are helping to protect our environment by using less polluting energy sources.

One further footnote for DIYers: installing ceiling fans does not necessarily include, nor preclude, the consumption of alcoholic beverages. However if one wishes to imbibe during the installation, it is most advisable to do so only while watching a qualified electrician do the job.

Ceiling fans have become a very important part of our homes and how we live. They have many benefits that we take for granted. Such as helping us to have good night rest with its soothing and calming breeze. Your average ceiling fan has a down rod extension that is used to connect the fan motor to the mounting plate that is then attached to the ceiling. These fans are very unique from other ceiling fans because they have no down rod and are mounted flush to the ceiling. This makes the fan blades very close to the ceiling so that you do not have any clearance issues. These fans are called hugger because they hug the ceiling like no other. Many huggers come with the option of down rod. So it can be mounted like a typical fan as well. Gas Fireplace Accessories

There are several different accessories and upgrades that can change the look and feel of gas fireplaces. Do you have the natural gasfireplace or the propane gasfireplace? It is very important to know what type of fireplace you have before changing anything that is involved with the working parts of that fireplace. What type of venting system do you have on the gas fireplace? It is important to know the venting if you are replacing items such as the gas logs.

Determine the type gas you have coming into the location. If you are located in a larger city, chances are the natural gas system is in place. Most of the larger cities have a very large network of gas pipelines ran through out the city. This is sort of like the cable or water bill that you receive monthly. The monthly fee is based on how much natural gas you consume which will depend on how often and how long the natural fireplaces are used everyday.

If you are located outside of a larger city, it may be necessary for you to use the propane as fireplace. The propane company will deliver a large storage tank that is left at the location. If you are worried about the appearance of the tank, some of them can be buried underground with just the top of the tank exposed so it can be refilled.. This tank will then be connected to the location of the gas fireplace. As the propane is used, the propane company will then come and refill the storage tank. How often refills are needed is determined by the size of the tank and how the propane is consumed on a daily basis.

The type of venting system will also need to be known before some of the internal working parts of the gas fireplace can be exchanged or upgraded. Replacement of the glass doors will be determined by the venting system. The gas fireplaces direct vent operates with the doors closed. But the ventless gas fireplace will operate with the doors open.

There are several different accessories that will enhance the look and feel of any fireplace. If you have a gas fireplace the addition of the fireplace tools and a fireplace wood holder will add to the ambiance of the fireplace that we all long for. Items like the fireplace hearth rug and the other little knick knacks will help. If for some reason you do not know or you are unsure of the type of gas or venting system, call your local gas company. They will come to your location and help determine what you have.
