Installing Ceiling Fan

There are different ways to install a fan. When you hire a professional to install a ceiling fan, you can choose any of the options for installation. If you are installing a ceiling fan yourself, you will need to choose an option that matches your abilities. If there is a ceiling fan currently in the ceiling, installing a new one will be easier than if there is no light or fan already in the ceiling. This can also effect the decision if you will install a ceiling fan yourself or hire someone to do it.

When choosing which type of installation that you want, if you are not sure, you can go online. You will be able to look up detailed instructions to see if you are able to do the installation yourself. Always follow all safety directions and turn off the electricity when doing any electrical work.

CEILING FANS

POWER SWITCH TO CEILING BOX ONLY

This is an installation where the fan (and light if it has a light kit) is turned on from a chain that is hanging from the fan. A remote control comes with some ceiling fan models. If there is already a light or ceiling fan in the ceiling, most do-it-yourselfers will be able to install this type of fan.

SINGLE SWITCH FOR LIGHT AND FAN

With this installation the power to the fan and light are turned on and off at the switch. To have the fan on high or low and to have the light or fan on separately, the chains will need to be used from the fan. This will take more knowledge especially if the switch isn't already there.

SINGLE SWITCH FOR FAN AND DIMMER FOR LIGHT

For this type of installation you will need more knowledge since the light and the fan will need its own wiring. This will be more challenging if it isn't already wired for this. The fan will still use the chain to switch fan speeds.

WIRE SPLICE

When the power starts at the switchbox, the hot line is spliced. The power then travels to both switches and then the fan and the light. When the power starts at the ceiling fan box, the hot line is spiced. The power will then travel to switches then to the fan and light.

HELPFUL HINTS

Do as much of the wiring as you can on the ground before you lift up to the ceiling. Print out any helpful information you need since the computer will be off. Double-check all aspects from safety to connections. When in doubt if you have the skill to install a ceiling fan, hire a professional. When renting, never work on electrical fixtures, the landlord should do that.
